Eiffage Energie Systèmes takes part in reconstructing Caty hydropower plant in the Tarn

Eiffage Energie Systèmes' teams coordinated the reconstruction of Caty power plant, located on the River Agout in the Tarn department, between March 2021 and January 2022. Eiffage Concessions, owner, developer and producer of hydropower plants and dams, is the contracting authority for a vast rehabilitation project which includes reconstructing this power plant.

As leader of a co-contracting project carried out with Eiffage Génie Civil, Eiffage Energie Systèmes coordinated the installation of equipment in the new Caty power plant, whose power has increased from 400 kW to 499 kW. This equipment is both hydromechanical (grid plan, bar screens, desilting gate) and electromechanical (turbine, alternator, transformer, high-voltage substation, electricity/automation and monorail).

"A hydropower plant generates electricity from the motive power of water that enters an intake, passes through the turbine and exits through the so-called suction. The head and flow rate of the water determine the power of the plant. The water intake must meet a number of technical characteristics to reduce the impact on the environment, both in terms of sediment transit and the upstream and downstream movement of fish. In the case of the Caty plant, demolishing the existing structure and building a new one proved to be less costly than adapting the existing plant," said Eiffage Énergie Systèmes Green Energy project manager Émilie Alletru.

Five hydropower stations operated by Eiffage Concessions are being rehabilitated or rebuilt on the Agout, from downstream to upstream: Caty (completely rebuilt and back in production since February 2022), Brazis (ecological compliance in December 2020) and Viterbe (2023), as well as Saint-Paul-Cap-de-Joux and La Gascarie, two power stations scheduled to be re-commissioned in September. For Eiffage Concessions, our experts are also involved in building Terrasson-Lavilledieu micropower station on the right bank of the Vézère River in the Dordogne, and renovating Chabanais micropower station on the Vienne, in Charente.
